We’re hiring a community behavioral health reporter! Apply today.

What you’ll do

Kensington Voice is looking for a community behavioral health reporter who cares about positive health outcomes and resiliency in Kensington and the larger North Philadelphia community.

You will write about health conditions associated with chronic stress and trauma (including but not limited to adverse childhood experiences), such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD, and health prevention initiatives that improve community health outcomes and build resilience.

This is an excellent opportunity for a reporter looking to grow their community engagement and journalism skills professionally in a supportive environment.

Primary tasks:

  • Community outreach and engagement, such as facilitating storytelling workshops
  • Reporting and writing
  • Basic photo work

Secondary tasks:

  • General news reporting and writing (ex. community events, community meetings, resources, and news stories)

Experience

Any employment experience demonstrating a history of punctuality, teamwork, and willingness to learn makes someone a great applicant.

Basic digital literacy (Internet, Google Docs) and professional working Spanish proficiency is required. You will be supported by a team of translators. Life experience within our coverage area is preferred.

For this position, we do NOT require a college education. Some journalism experience is preferred, but we’re willing to help train someone on the required tasks. The reporter will receive mandatory behavioral health training.

This is a full-time position starting in December 2022. This is a 12-month grant-funded position. We are hopeful to fundraise to make it a permanent position but there is no guarantee. You will work 40 hours a week and be paid a starting salary of $50,000 a year. You will receive a quarterly bilingual stipend ($300 per quarter/$1,200 total). You must work at least three days in the Kensington Voice office located at 3237 Amber Street and two days remotely. This requirement may change depending on public health guidelines.

About us

Kensington Voice is a community hub and newsroom serving the heart of Kensington, North Philadelphia, and the surrounding communities of Fairhill, Harrowgate, Norris Square, and Port Richmond.

At Kensington Voice, we fight for system-wide change by prioritizing the needs of individuals. We provide a place and programs where all people can exercise their voice to positively impact their attitudes and emotions, relationships, communities, and society. Sometimes that results in publishing community voices, and sometimes it doesn’t.

Our upcoming media lab will have youth programming, media equipment, and technology like computers and a printer. Our newsroom has covered neighborhood events, programs, resources, and topics the community cares about since 2019. We publish in print and online.
