Kensington news brief: Free diapers, ghost cars & SEPTA's Bus Revolution

Need a roundup of the local news impacting Kensington?

Kensington Voice is publishing weekly news updates to increase community information. There will be a monthly roundup in our print newspaper, too.

Here’s this week’s roundup below.

GIRL SCOUTS: Kensington’s new Girl Scouts troop is still recruiting girls ages 6-14 in the 19134 ZIP code. To sign up, contact Jayda Stanford-Collier by emailing jstanfordcollier@nkcdc.org or calling 215-427-0350 ext. 127.

GHOST CARS: The Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) has an online form for reporting “ghost cars” or vehicles without a visible license plate. You can request the investigation of a vehicle using this form.

FREE DISTRIBUTION: The Greater Philadelphia Diaper Bank’s Monthly Distribution Day will be this Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the MaKen North Building (3525 I St.) along Venango Street. They will distribute diapers, wipes, period products, and adult incontinence products on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment or registration is required. For more information, call 215-919-8500.

FREE ACTIVITY: In partnership with UPenn’s Premier Latin Dance Troupe, Onda Latina, The Lighthouse will host a free dance class for children and young adults ages 12-18. The troupe will teach Salsa and Bachata this Wednesday, 4-5:30 p.m., at the Somerset Community Center (141 W. Somerset St.). To register, click here.

NEW MURAL: In partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia, Norris Square Neighborhood Project (NSNP) is kicking off a series of conversations about the new mural at Las Parcelas. The new mural, which will celebrate the Puerto Rican women’s group, Grupo Motivos, will replace the current mural, “Wall of Heroes,” due to repairs and an opportunity for change. The public meeting will be this Thursday at 4 p.m. at Las Parcelas (2248 N. Palethorp St.).

FREE DISTRIBUTION: The Circle of Hope in Fishtown will host its Free Baby & Kids Goods Exchange this Saturday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at 2007 Frankford Ave. To help sort items, contact doulahana@gmail.com or send an Instagram message.

SEPTA BUSES: On March 20, SEPTA is hosting a virtual “Transit Talk” to share an updated draft of the new bus network. The proposed changes to the bus system received strong criticism from the public and City Council last year. The Transit Talk will have a Q&A session following the presentation of the Updated Draft Network and community feedback opportunities this spring. To register for the Zoom webinar, click here. For more information, go to SEPTA’s Bus Revolution website

FREE ACTIVITY: The McPherson Square Book Club’s next meeting will be on March 28. This month’s book is “We Should All Be Feminists” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The club meets every month on Zoom. To receive the meeting link, email McPherson Square Library’s Tuesday Chalmers at chalmerst@freelibrary.org.
