‘Your spirit is loveable’: A Kensington resident writes a poem for his friend battling cancer

Drew Watson’s friend Sunday Soffos poses with her bouquet of flowers.

Drew Watson is 35 years old. Raised in Kensington, he grew up with his four brothers and father. Watson had a lot of free, unsupervised time, so he started rapping and writing poetry at 12 years old. Writing poetry became a hobby and outlet to help him cope with his substance use disorder. He is now in recovery.

Watson’s dear friend Sunday Soffos is going through a battle with cancer. Even though she’s fighting that battle, the poem describes a lot more about her besides the cancer, he said.

DID I SAY

By Drew Watson

DID I SAY…

You’re more than awesome

You are one of a kind

Your personality blossoms

and your bright soul is not confined

DID I SAY…

Your smile is beautiful

Your hope is bright

Your spirit is lovable

You shine through with your light

Sometimes you’ll forget these things

When your life gets tough

You’ll feel as if you’re tied up by strings

You’ll feel like your life is rough

DID I SAY…

But when you get to that point

When you can’t remember all the good

When you’re being torn apart joint by joint

Look back at this and remember what I said

DID I SAY…

You’re perfect in every way

You are the light in the dark

Your spirit is yellow, not gray

And you are the start of a hopeful spark

DID I SAY…

You’re more than awesome

You are one of a kind

Your personality blossoms

and your bright soul is not confined
