About us

Kensington Voice is a community-driven newsroom serving the heart of Kensington in North Philadelphia. Our mission is to cover the Kensington area with empathy and thoughtfulness while also creating journalism and storytelling that are by and for the community. 

We publish in print and online. Our published work includes news stories, resource guides, community perspectives, and community-created content like essays and poems. We publish stories from Cecil B. Moore Avenue to Tioga Street and from 6th Street to Aramingo Avenue. This includes parts of Fairhill, Kensington, Harrowgate, Norris Square, and Port Richmond.

What you’ll do

We’re looking for someone who cares about the Kensington and larger North Philadelphia community who can help us with our mission and operations while also having the opportunity to grow professionally. You may be asked to help with the following tasks:

  • Community engagement 
  • Copy editing and fact-checking
  • News accessibility projects, like the newspaper boxes
  • Print and web design 
  • Writing and reporting 

Experience

Any employment or volunteer experience that demonstrates a history of punctuality, teamwork, and willingness to learn makes someone a great applicant. Basic digital literacy (Internet, Google Docs) is required. Life experience in the Fairhill, Kensington, Harrowgate, and Norris Square neighborhoods preferred. 

For this position, we do NOT require the following: A college education, journalism experience, or experience working in an office environment. We’re willing to help train someone on the required tasks, including print design.

This is a part-time, hourly position from January 10, 2022 to April 29, 2022. You will work 12 hours a week and be paid $15 an hour. You will work both remotely and in the Kensington Voice office (3237 Amber St.), dependent on COVID-19 safety guidelines.
