“What I like about Lillian Marrero is the atmosphere and the people that work here. They’re friendly and helpful. If you need help looking for some type of book, or let’s say you’re in school and writing a book report, they have computers, and if you have a bit of a problem, they’ll help…For those who live in this area, they can just go within walking distance. I’ve seen people arrive from way out — different parts of the city.”

“They have different things that you can do for kids — walking, playing basketball — and it’s a good environment close to the train station and the bus. There’s some family stores, or bodega…It’s also next to the hospital, [in case]something happens to the kids.”

“One of my favorite churches in this area is on Kensington Avenue between Huntington Avenue and Somerset. It’s called the Rock Ministries. The pastor [Buddy Osborne] is a dedicated man of the Lord. He’s a real super guy. He’s a local Fishtown boy, and he gave his life to Christ. He opened up this church, and [helps] people who are in need in this area.”

“I was homeless not long ago, and I would go there to eat. The food isn’t 100% that great — not the way I would make it if I was cooking — but it’s a good place… People don’t ‘wild out,’ and if they do, they handle it in a very good way — the way that you should in a church. They make you feel welcomed.”

“I like the people, the services they provide for the community. …They help people on a daily basis. They give clothes [and] food, [and] if you don’t want to eat the food they have bread. …People [should] be thankful for that stuff. For those trying to help you, you’ve got to take advantage of it and let them help you when they can.”
