Community gardens build neighborhood connections. So why is it so hard to acquire land?
In Kensington, a chilly light rain poured around the fenced-in Ruth Street Garden. The colors of the garden – greens, reds, purples – popped against a stormy gray sky. In the northeast corner, Britt Carpenter shuffled several chickens over to their coop.
“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting this [escape] this morning! Figured out there’s a hole in the fence,” he explained from underneath the black hood of his sweatshirt.

Free Trainings
- Congreso de Latinos Unidos is offering its Free Human Services Credential Program to adults ages 18 and older. Eligible participants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, at least one year of work experience, and be able to attend in-person classes. To apply, go here and fill out the interest form. The program's classes start on January 13.
- Beyond Literacy is recruiting for its Free Pre-Apprenticeship Weatherization Program. Participants will learn trade skills such as plumbing, carpentry, and more. The program will be held at 106 W.
